MUMBAI: May be the term floating currency will have a new meaning to it. State Bank of India has launhed a floating ATM(Automated Teller Machine) on a ferry service in Kerala.

Launched today, 9 February 2004, by State Bank of India, deputy managing director (Information Technology)Ashok Kini, the service introduces a novel channel for banking at Ernakulam, Kochi.

In what seems like a unique concept, the ATM has been installed on Jhankar ferry boat plying between Ernakulam and Vypeen. Belonging to the Kerala Shipping and Inland navigation corporation, the ferry makes 30 trips a day carrying approximately 5000 people and their vehicles. The bank is sure that the floating ATM will be a hit with the traveling public in god's own country as they can fulfill their banking requirements even when they are on the move.

The ATM will cater to the needs of the traveling public in Ernakulam, and has been supplied by NCR Corporation, while connectivity has been established by Reliance Infocomm, using CDMA (code division multiple access) technology, says a company release.

T he SBI Group has around 3000 ATMs spread across the country. The bank plans to set up 140 ATMs by the year-end, and with all 234 branches fully computerized. The release says that SBI is poised to offer a full array of technology products including Internet banking, Tele-banking, electronic funds transfer and e-payment facility.
