India’s 'Om Shanti Om' makes its mark at Asian Film Awards

HONG KONG: Last night saw a galaxy of stars descending on the second Asian Film Awards, held at Hong Kong's Convention Centre.

Carrying the Indian torch at the gala event was 2007's Hindi blockbuster Om Shanti Om, which won the best composer's award for Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani. Debutante Deepika Padukone also won a nomination in the best actress category for her role in the film.

The Grand Hall venue located just next to the sea on the top floor of the Convention centre, offered a real spectacular panoramic view of Hong Kong in all its glory with its well lit skyscrapers all around.

One differentiator at the awards was that the actors mingled with the invitees at the pre-awards cocktails function and were more than happy to oblige fans with their autographs and pictures.

The Asian Film Awards, now in its second year, unveiled its new logo at the scintillating awards gala, which was telecast live.

Secret Sunshine from South Korea not only took the honours for Best Film but also the Best Director award for Lee Chang –Dong.

The Best Actor went to home town favorite Tony Leung Chiu-wai for his role as the collaborator and assassination target in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution from the Taiwan/Chinese, Mainland and The /USA country Territory while Best Actress was awarded to Jeon Do-yeon for her role in Secret Sunshine from South Korea.

In the Best Supporting Actress category, Joan Chen walked away with the honours for her role in The Sun Also Rises from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong territory. The Best Supporting Actor went to Sun Honglei for his role in Mongol from the Mongol/Kazakhstan/Germany and Russia territory.

The Best Screen writer Category award went to Au Kin-yee/Wai Ka-fai for Mad Detective from Hong Kong while Liao Pen –Jung walked away with the best Cinematographer category award for his Help Me Eros, from Taiwan.

Best Production Designer went to Cao Jiu-ping/Zhang Jian-qun for The Sun Also Rises from the Chinese Mainland / Hong Kong.

The Best Editor Award went to David Richardson for Eye In The Sky while in the Best Visual Effects Category NG Yuen-Fai walked away with the honours for The Warlords from the Chinese mainland/Hong Kong territory.

The Asian Film Awards (AFA), among Asia's most prestigious awards ceremonies, have been instituted to acknowledge the finest in Asian Cinema and honour eminent Asian filmmakers and their superlative endeavors.
