Broadband subscribers cross 3-million mark in India

NEW DELHI: The total broadband subscriber base (above 256 Kbps download) has reached 3.24 million by the end of January 2008 as compared to 3.13 million by the end of December 2007.

 

According to figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, there was a growth of 900,000 additions between April 1007 and January 2008. In comparison, the growth between April 2006 and January 2007 had been 800,000.

The number of broadband users in March 2006 was 1.35 million, rising to an approximate 3.24 million in January 2008.

The report says that a total of 8.74 million telephone connections had been added during January 2008 as compared to 8.11 million connections added in December 2007. The total number of telephone connections reaches 281.62 million at the end of January 2008 as compared to 272.88 million in December 2007.

 
The overall tele-density at the end of January 2008 was 24.63 per cent as against 23.89 per cent in December 2007.

In the wireless segment, 8.77 million subscribers are added in the month of January 2008 as against 8.17 million subscribers added in the month of December 2007.This is the highest ever addition in a month till date. The total wireless subscribers [GSM, CDMA & WLL(F)] base stood at 242.40 million at the end of January 2008.

In the wireline segment, the subscriber base has slightly decreased to 39.22 million in the month of January 2008 as against 39.25 million subscribers in December 2007.
