MUMBAI: Supermarket giant Wal-Mart has announced it will exclusively sell high-definition (HD) DVDs in Sony's Blu-ray format, thus joining the league of Blockbuster, Netflix and Best Buy.

This decision is considered a serious onslaught on the Toshiba-supported HD DVD format.

According to Wal-Mart, customers have a clear preference for Blu-Ray, and the rival format will be phased out by June.

Although the better picture quality and bigger capacity of next-gen DVDs and players were expected to help revitalise the $24 billion global home DVD market, like the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, having two DVD formats has impaired sales of both.

Interestingly, Toshiba America Consumer Products president Akiyo Ozaka, speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show 2007 (CES) in Las Vegas, had said that HD DVD "has not lost."
Toshiba's next moves are yet to be known.
