DELHI: First it was Ramanand Sagar who brought traffic to
a standstill on Sundays at audiences remained indoors to see
Ramayana. Then it was BR Chopra who captivated Sunday
morning audiences with Mahabharata, followed shortly
thereafter by Sunil Agnihotri who came with the fantasy Chandrakanta.
Agnihotri,
who then shifted to afternoon programming with his series
Yug and then on to other programmes, is now coming
back to Doordarshan's national channel DD One with his latest
costume drama Chandramukhi.
Chandramukhi
is being shot on outdoor locations like Kulu Manali, Raj Pipla
and Mahableshwar. According to the concept, the Hero turns
into an animal and kills his own people every Amavasya (Moonless
night). There was also a curse on him, whereby his father
turned blind when there was eye-contact between the two. The
only way he can get his father's eyesight back is by getting
a particular flower from Princess Chandramukhi's Kingdom,
a place from where nobody has ever come back alive.
After the success of Jai Ganesha and Betaal Pachisi,
Sunil's last serial was Aa Gale Lag Ja in 2003. He
was later busy with a film for children, Ali Baba Chalis
Chor with Arbaz Khan.
Agnihotri told indiantelevision.com that he had been approached
by his producers Applause to do a Fantasy. "I thought
for sometime and had to make something that was starkly different
from Chandrakanta and yet as entertaining. This idea
was inspired by an Arabian tale Gul-E-Bakawli. I narrated
the line to Applause and they liked it. That is how Chandramukhi
was born. It has action, thrills, emotions and comedy. Special
effects play a very important part in the serial".
Asked
if there were takers for such stories in today's day and age,
he replied in the affirmative. "The West has spent millions
of dollars on fantasies and are still spending millions to
entertain by always trying to create something new in this
genre." Chandramukhi will be telecast on DD 1.
The series will star Deepak Parashar, Natasha Sinha, Krutika
Desai, Mamik, Sachin Khurana, Nishigandha Wad, Amita Nangia,
Goga Kapoor, Saadika , Shiva, Sanjiva, Tej Sapru, Raja Chaudhray,
Ram Mohan, Vinod Kapoor, Rita Jagtiani, Dinesh Hingoo, Ria
Walia, Gunjan Pant, Mahindra Ghule, Manish Shrma, Savi Junja,
Yojesh, Anwer Fatehan, Jai Prakesh, Snandar Anrohi and Vindu
Dara Singh.
