NEW DELHI: Communications and Information Technology Mýnýster Raja has saýd that an institutional mechanism has been put in place for early vacation by the Defence forces of spectrum sýnce that ýs a key hurdle to the roll out of 3G services.

He was hopeful that some spectrum for both 2G and 3G services will be vacated by the end of this year. The Minister hoped that this could pave the way for a roll out of 3G services by the middle of next year.

Speaking at the Inauguration of 3G India Forum Organised by CNBC Network 18 here today, Raja said 3G offerred an exciting opportunity for operators to provide innovative services, especially to the subcontinent's increasingly young, affluent and IT-literate urban population. As the world's second largest growing economy with rapidly rising income levels, India stands to gain enormously from a wide range of broadband mobile services from internet access to mobile TV.

3G also offers vast potential to open the door to new social initiatives ranging from telemedicine and distance learning in rural schools to e-Government, he added.
