MUMBAI: At the Frames convention attendees got a flavour of hot
new formats airing on television networks across the globe. Research
firm Wit comes out with the monthly "The WIT Fresh TV Report"
which spots new shows launched in more than 30 markets worldwide.
This session it is worth noting is now a regular item at the
television trade events MipTV and Mipcom in Cannes, France.
Participants at Frames viewed clips from a variety of TV shows.
The presentation also covered the most creative trends in different
programming genres.
One kind of show that does well are talent shows. An example of that
is Americas Got Talent which airs in the US on NBC. It has been
adapted in a few European countries including France, Greece, Portgal.
This is basically a variety competition. One participant a professional
finger snappist danced to classic 1950s rock, as well. Another man
with a plethora of horns attached to his body moved different parts
of his body to honk the horns, making humorous music.
Then there is Impossible Duets where a famous singer get a chance
through the wonder of technology to sing a song with a deceased artist
that he/she admires. In Extreme Activity celebrities have toi mime
to describe a concept in 90 seconds. There are two teams in this show
pitting men versus women. There is fun to be had.
Blackjack Bowling combines sport of bowling with the blackjack card
game. The number of cards is added to the number of pins knocked down.
One thus scores points. There is also a special card which specifies
that number of pins that need to be knocked down. Meet Your Host is
a show that has grown in popularity in Germany. Here a famous television
personality challenges viewers to different challenges both physical
and mental. The difficulty is that the host has a greater degree of
familiarity with the tasks.The Identity game show involves trying
to identify from 12 strangers the one who has the characteristics
mentioned. There are helplines of course including ask the experts.
Wit notes that dating shows work especially in the UK. One show is
called Carries Getting Married. Here a single woman lives in
a luxurious place. She has to meet men and decide. She has a team
to assist her to find the prince after going through several frogs
as in unsuitable men. Sports formats are also gaining currency. One
show called The Match has aired in the UK. Here a bunch of celebrities
try to make it to a football team that will play against a former
champion side. The chosen celebrity squad of 21 members live and train
in a football academy. A coach gives them tips. |
