MUMBAI: UK pubcaster the BBC's commerical arm BBC Worldwide has appointed Peter Mercier as head of mobile in its digital media division.

Mercier, who was previously director of business development for MobiTV in Europe, will lead BBC Worldwide’s continued push into the mobile space, working with content brands such as Little Britain, Doctor Who and Top Gear.

With agreements in place with UK operators such as Orange and 3 and with international partners in New Zealand and Korea, BBC Worldwide has already developed a mobile business stream. Mercier joins the company to further develop this area of the business by developing and managing key mobile accounts and closing international content licensing deals.

BBC Worldwide director of digital media Simon Danker said, "Mobile is clearly a huge opportunity for a major rights owner and international broadcaster like ourselves. Both the domestic and international markets are hungry for quality content and we can satisfy that hunger with some of the world’s best known and loved content brands. Peter’s experience in both mobile and television qualify him perfectly for this role and his appointment underlines our dedication to maximising revenues from the mobile platform."

BBC Worldwide mobile head Peter Mercier says, "BBC Worldwide has a world famous brand, access to some of the best content and content brands for the mobile consumer and a track record of entertaining and engaging with audiences worldwide. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the mobile industry in the UK and internationally to build on BBC Worldwide’s position in the marketplace."
