Crossword starts in-store promotions for final edition of 'Potter' series

MUMBAI: Leveraging the excitement around the 'Harry Potter' property, bookstore Crossword has lined up a host of in-store activities for Potter fans in time for the release of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

As part of this promotional activity titled 'Pottermania,' the month of July will be completely dedicated to special events at its stores across the country.

Readings from books 1-7 will be conducted along with treasure hunts, puppet shows, trivia competitions, craft activities, origami and picture based housie. All this will lead up to the grand Potter party on 21 July when the book finally goes on sale, states an official release.

Crossword Bookstores head - operations and marketing Aniyan Nair said, "In 2005, we sold over 10,000 copies of 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' across our 26 stores in the country. We expect the sales figures to be much higher for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (in the range of 20,000 -25,000 copies), as we have expanded to 44 stores this year and the level of enthusiasm and interest in the last book is the highest in the series.

"The new book will be unveiling some suspense and children and youngsters across the country are gearing up for the launch day. We are looking forward to a grand launch on 2 July and to celebrate the Harry Potter we have started weekend activities at our stores all over India."

All flagship Crossword stores in each city will open between 5:30 and 6:00 am to ensure that Potter fans get their copy of the book at the earliest possible time. The books will go on sale across the country at 6 am.

The store started taking pre-booking orders for the new title more than three months ago, and the number of pre-booked copies is currently over 6500. With the film version of the 5th book ('Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix') also set to release a week before the release of the Deathly Hallows, the expectations are high, adds the release.

The in-store activities lined up for 'Pottermania' include:

- Learn magic tricks - Street magic- All Harry potter fans can learn magic during the festival. The magician just won't exhibit his magic tricks but will also teach children a few of the tricks.

- Craft Activity: - Make your own Hogwarts express: - Children would be supplied with materials and be taught to make their own Hogwarts express, which they can then carry home with them as a souvenir.

- The Harry potter quiz contest - An event which would test your knowledge of all previous Harry potters. Teams of four children to compete for the coveted event.

- Harry potter puppetry show -Previous Harry potter stories will exhibited by the way of a puppetry show.

- Harry potter story reading with Claymation - Story reader would be reading out stories from previous Harry potter books to the children. Elements from the story would be picked (Wand, broom, hat etc) and children need to make those elements from the clay provided to them.

- Harry potter picture housie- Similar to a normal housie, this would be a matrix of 3 x 3 wherein numbers would be replaced by Harry potter characters.

- Harry potter origami competition - Outlines of different Harry potter characters with colored paper and glue would be provided to the children. They could then complete the picture using a collage of the different colored paper which has been provided to them.

- The Harry potter treasure hunt - Different elements from Harry potter would be hidden at different locations in the store. Teams of five children will be made and clues given to them.

- HP puzzles competition- Cut outs of different Harry potter characters will be given to the children which they need to join and make the final character within a stipulated period of time.
