MUMBAI: UK media regulatory body Ofcom has charged the BBC with a fine of 50,000 pounds over a phone-in scam that occurred in November last year as part of the 'Blue Peter' contest. This is the first time that BBC has been fined by Ofcom.

The incident occured when a winner could not be identified due to some technical problems and a young girl visiting the studio was made to pose as the winner on the show.

According to Ofcom, the broadcaster is guilty of deception of its audiences and for involving a child in that deception. In this regard, care must be taken of children participating in such activities and the competition must be fair, adds the regulator.
