MUMBAI:
Broadcasters
Sony Entertainment, Nimbus, ESPN Star Sports, Ten Sports,
NDTV in partnership with US based media equity fund Providence
and sports marketing agency World Sports Group are among those
who have picked up tender documents for the Indian Premier
League's global media rights for broadcast and other media
rights, according to a newswire report put out today.
"The
response from all the international broadcasters has also
been very inspiring. I think collectively this response is
reflective of the international stature of the IPL and the
fact that it is poised to become a true international franchise,"
Press Trust of India quotes Lalit Modi, chairman and commissioner,
IPL as saying.
BCCI
opened the invitation to tender process four days back but
has decided to extend the deadline after the response, PTI
quotes Modi as stating.
Modi
had earlier told Economic Times: We are allowing any
broadcaster who is interested to bid. However, for them to
qualify, the IPL working committee will look at criteria such
as minimum reach, which needs to be substantial.
The
ET report had quoted Modi as confirming that a total of seven
broadcasters have bought the IPL tender till date. ET, quoting
industry sources, named Sahara, Ten Sports, NDTV group, 9X
and Television 18 as among those that has expressed interest
in bidding for the Leagues broadcast rights.
However,
sources from two of the broadcast companies mentioned in the
reports gave a different picture to Indiantelevision.com.
According to one of them, only applications have been taken
for the tenders till now. The tenders will be opened only
in late January, the sources say.
