NEW DELHI: As in previous years, the public service television channels are getting ready to lay the table on New Year’s eve with some delectable dishes.

Doordarshan is telecasting a special programme titled Gata Rahe Har Pal, to usher in the New Year 2008 on 31 December from 10 pm onwards on the national network DD-1. The programme will be a variety entertainment musical show featuring some celebrity artists, playback singers, popular folk dances, humorous skits, etc. with shades epitomising the year that has been and the year that will be.

The stars will include playback singers Hariharan and Alka Yagnik, choreographers Avni Shah and Santosh Shetty, Zubin Garg of "Ya Ali" fame from the film Gangster, Shreya Ghosal, Suresh Wadekar and Sadhana Sargam. There will be folk dances, and a light humorous skit by Yaqoob Saeed. Ishita Arun will take the viewers through the musical journey.

The other public service broadcaster, Lok Sabha TV is breaking new grounds by presenting a music competition with five MPs including one minister taking part!

The five MPs - minister of state for heavy industries Kanti Singh, Shailendra Yadav, Alok Mehta, Kiran Maheswari and Ranjeet Ranjan – are participating in the antakshari competition organised for the channel. They have been divided into three groups - Sur, Saaz and Sargam - in a four-round contest. There will be a singing round as well.

The channel is also doing several other programmes to round off the year, mostly in the form of yearly round-ups of politics, India’s relations with its neghbours, women empowerment, etc. It is also organising a mushaira for MPs ahead of the Republic Day.
