NEW DELHI: Major broadcasters are going to meet the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Monday to discuss on the a la carte tariff order for non-Cas (conditional access system) areas.

This follows the turning down of the broadcasters' plea by the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (Tdsat) on 11 December that Trai may be refrained from taking punitive action.

Broadcasters will decide on moving the Delhi High Court only after their meeting with Trai, sources told Indiantelevision.com.

"We are going to appeal to Trai to remove the a la carte aspect as this is only a lever in the hands of the MSOs (multi-system operators). As we have stated in Tdsat, there is no way this benefit can pass on to the consumers. There is no such mechanism available in the non-addressable system which can ensure a la carte choice to consumers," a senior broadcast official told Indiantelevision.com.

Interestingly, Trai and Tdsat in the last hearing on the case filed by Star, Zee and others, have held that MSOs would have to ensure that subscribers are reached the benefit of a la carte pricing.
