Spice launches TV on mobile, to offer ICL live

BANGALORE: Mobile operator Spice Telecom has tied up with Essel Group's Indian Cricket League (ICL) to offer live coverage of their ongoing Twenty20 matches to its subscribers.

The launch of TV on mobile branded as 'Spice TV' was announced in Chandigarh.

ICL's international cricketers and former captains of Pakistan and West Indies Inzamam-ul-Haq and Brian Lara were among the celebrities who unveiled the service in Chandigarh.

 

On offer is a bouquet of 13 channels ranging from news (NDTV, CNN-IBN), entertainment to cartoon channels (Cartoon Network). Zoom and Bindass are available but major general entertainment channels are conspicuous by their absence in the offering.

 
As per a company source, Spice plans to commercially launch the service within a month in both the circles it currently operates in. At present, the service will be available only on about 50 models of Nokia and Sony Ericsssn phones, but Spice is working out the modalities for making it available on other models of handsets.

The Service can be experienced free for 1 month/1 billing cycle for all subscriptions before 11 January 2008.

For all the channels, Spice TV will charge subscribers Rs 175 per month.

The company has released the pricing for TV on mobile services.

Future device support includes Spice, Samsung, Motorola and other low-end GPRS-enabled devices on Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

Spice Telecom currently operates in the Punjab and Karnataka circles. It has a subscriber base of about 2.5 million in Punjab and 1.4 million in Karnataka. The company hopes to have 4 million plus subscribers by the end of this calendar year.
