MUMBAI: Microsoft has acquired Multimap, an online map service based in London, to enhance its existing Windows Live web-based services.

Microsoft said that Multimap will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft as part of its Search and Virtual Earth teams.

Multimap provides street-level maps, travel directions and local information. It also offers hotel and restaurant-booking services, and builds private-label mapping tools for companies, including Hilton Hotels and Ford Motor Co.

Now Google, Microsoft and other search providers are expanding these services to mobile devices, where advertisers are excited about being able to reach consumers on the go, using phones equipped with GPS capabilities.
