DELHI: Doordarshan is to set up two additional channels specifically
for states in North East India which will broadcast programmes
in all languages and dialects of the states in the region.
Information
and Broadcasting ministry sources told Indiantelevision.com
that an amount of Rs 2.57 billion has been approved for various
hardware and software schemes of Doordarshan including the
North East channels.
The
two channels were part of the special package (Phase II) for
expansion and improvement of DD services in the northeastern
region and the island territories of Andaman and Nicobar and
Lakshadweep approved in May 2006.
The
earth station at Guwahati is to be augmented by providing
an additional uplink chain for uplinking the two new channels,
and is expected to be set up during 2008.
Meanwhile,
Prasar Bharati is still to finalise the policy for commissioning
programmes in the northeast. The policy when finalized will
be placed before the Prasar Bharati Board for approval.
In
an effort to augment its programming in the region, Prasar
Bharati has set up a marketing division in Guwahati which
serves as a single window for catering to the needs of both
advertisers and clients in the entire northeast region.
All
India Radio, which claims to have improved its commercial
revenue thanks to the marketing division, offers 50 per cent
concession on commercial rates to NGOs and voluntary organizations
for promoting public service broadcasting to make the stations
commercially viable.
