NEW DELHI: With the declaration of 2007 as the year of Broadband, a total of 28 projects have been approved by the government for development of the core e-Governance under the “State Wide Area Network” (SWAN), envisaged to establish a minimum Two Mbps capacity linking the State Headquarters to the Block headquarters all over the country.

The Government had in March 2005 approved projects for all the 35 states and union territories with an estimated outlay of Rs 33.34 billion, out of which an estimated Rs 20.05 billion would be met as Grant-in-Aid by the Department of Information Technology, to be expanded over five years. The SWAN scheme is aimed at creating a secure Government network for the purpose of delivering G2G and G2C services.

While the 28 projects are at various stages of implementation, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Shakeel Ahmed informed Parliament today that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has opted out of the SWAN scheme, while Goa has initiated its own Broadband Network in collaboration with the private sector.
