Govt. says IT act amendment a must to fight cyber crime

NEW DELHI: A total of 481 reports of cyber crime were reported in 2005 compared to 347 in 2004 and 471 in 2003, according to figures made available by the National Crime Records Bureau.

 

These crimes were registered under the Information Technology Act 2000 and the Indian Penal Code. In addition, the Central Bureau of Investigation registered nine cases during the present calendar year till 31 July compared to three in 2006, four in 2004 and only one in 2003.

Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Shakeel Ahmed admitted in parliament that there had been an increase in cyber crime with greater number of people taking to use of computers.

 
He said while both the IT Act 2000 and IPC had the legal framework to deal with cyber crime, the IT (Amendment) Bill had been introduced in parliament last month to provide for newer kinds of cyber crime including publishing if material containing sexually explicit act in electronic form, video voyeurism, breach of confidentiality and leakage of data by service providers, e-commerce frauds, identity theft and offensive messages through communication services.

The Government had also conducted several awareness campaigns and training programmes on cyber laws and cyber crimes for judicial officers and law enforcement agencies. Simultaneously, the CBI was also acting as a nodal agency to train the state police personnel deal with cyber crimes.
