MUMBAI: Like
a tortoise crawling at an agonisingly slow pace, the cricket
World Cup finally concluded this weekend with Australia expectedly
winning for the third time.
The
next edition takes place in the Indian subcontinent and the
BCCI is said to be willing to have a shorter tournament.
BCCI
secretary Niranjan Shah has been quoted in reports saying
that one problem with this event has been that the tourney
has been too long. The ICC is said to be looking to shorten
the event by one week when it takes place in 2011..
Shah
also attacked the ICC, saying that it has become more and
more bureaucratic and was costing its members money by unnecessarily
employing so many people.
Shah
has also not ruled out the possibility of proposing an unprecedented
no-confidence motion against ICC CEO Malcolm Speed's administration
at the next meeting in June.
One
can also argue that the murkiness of the atmosphere under
which Sri Lanka and Australia played the last three overs
mirrored the event as a whole. Speed has acknowleged that
this was a fundamental error that should not have happened.
It
seems that Shah is not alone in his criticism of the ICC.
During the presentation ceremony after the final, ICC president
Percy Sonn and Speed were booed at the closing ceremony by
the crowd, who cheered the two great West Indian cricketers,
Garfield Sobers and Everton Weekes.
