MUMBAI: The National Council of Women's Organisations (NCWO) in the US a coalition of more than 200 women's organisations has called for parental action and congressional hearings in response to a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) report on television violence.

The report called on Congress to legislate limits on violence on broadcast television and cable.

NCWO chair Susan Scanlan says, "Parents and caregivers should be outraged at the level of violence on television when numerous studies clearly document the negative impact on American children. Congress needs to seriously look at this issue, but parents don't need to wait.

"There are technology solutions available that parents can use to ensure quality children's programming in their homes."

UNCWO is partnering with TiVo to promote TiVo KidZone, a service available at no additional charge with the purchase of a Tivo. This gives parents easy access to quality children's programming along with the capability to block content parents deem inappropriate.

In a statement accompanying the FCC Report, FCC commissioner Robert McDowell said, "TiVo offers KidZone, a tool that combines editorial recommendations from experts with technology for parents to select the shows they want their children to watch." TiVo KidZone has been praised by national child advocacy and media watchdog groups and by leaders across the political spectrum.
