MUMBAI: The
European Parliament has voted for common sanctions throughout
Europe to combat the piracy of electronic media.
The
measures include fines for counterfeiters of up to $364,290
if organised crime is involved, or prison terms of up to four
years.
Media
reports state that approval from EU countries is also needed
for the measure to become law.
The
legislation has spurred angry resistance in some member states
because criminal law has long been the exclusive domain of
individual countries. Some European Union members reports
indicate like Britain and the Netherlands, believe that the
proposal strikes at the core of a country's sovereignty and
ought to remain under the authority of national governments.
