Disney Channel rolls out on digital platforms in Korea

MUMBAI: Disney Channel, which had rolled out on CJ CableNet’s Hello D in January and on Qrix Communication’s Big Box TV in March, is slated to roll out on yet another digital platform - C&M - in April.

The digital roll-out of Disney Channel brings the total to four pay-TV platforms in Korea, including DTH (direct-to-home) service SkyLife where the channel has been available since July 2002.

 
 

Disney Channel is the second channel of Walt Disney Television International – Southeast Asia/Korea (WDTVI-SEA/Korea) on Hello D and Big Box TV. The first WDTVI-SEA/Korea channel on those platforms is the preschool channel, Playhouse Disney Channel.

The launch of Disney Channel on digital cable platforms comes at a time of growth for the digital cable industry in Korea. According to the Korea Cable TV Association (KCTA), there’s a projected subscriber base of over 834,000 in 2006 and this is expected to more than double to 1.8 million by 2007. KCTA estimates digital cable subscription in Korea to reach 7 million by 2010.

These carriage deals increases the number of areas that transmit Disney Channel in Korea from 11 to 27. The areas covered by the three platforms include Kangbuk-gu, Nowon-gu, Gwangjin-gu, Jung-gu, Seodaemu-gu, Gwangjin-gu, Seongdong-gu Mapo-gu, Sungbuk-gu, Songpa-gu, Yongsan-gu, Seocho-gu, Kuro-gu, Jungrang-gu, Jongro-gu and Gangdong-gu in Seoul area.

Also included are Geochang, Hapcheon, Changryeong, Milyang, Yangsan, Kimhae, Uiryong, Haman, Tongyoung, Geoje, Gosung, Jinhae, Changwon, Masan, Joong-Busan, Haeundae, Buk-Incheon, Kuri, Namyangju, Hanam, Kwangju, Gapyung, Yangpyung, Yeoju, Ilsan and Uijungbu.
