  MUMBAI: It will be a revamped and expanded version of the DD Awards that will see light of day on Saturday at the Goregaon Sports Club, Mumbai.    
A far cry from the low key first edition of the annual awards that were held at the Siri Fort auditorium in Delhi last year, this year's awards instituted by the public broadcaster to encourage in house talent, will also honour the cream of talent in the news categories - namely - best anchor, best news producer, best news cameraperson, best live despatch, best RNU and best news editor.

From the 17 categories the awards had been classified into last year, this year the awards have been broken down into 35 categories, including trophies reserved for the best regional kendras as well. Information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj will be the chief guest at the function, while Maharashtra deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal will preside. Minister of state for information and broadcasting Ramesh Bais will be the guest of honour. Television personality Sachin and former Miss World Yukta Mookhey will be chief anchors of the show which will also have performances by artistes including Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamoorthy, Shaan, Jaspinder Narula, Colonial Cousins, Kay Kay and The Indo Jazz Fusion Group.

Apart from categories like the best telefilm, best live event and best news report, the awards will also felicitate the the best administrative work and DG's Special Award along with a trophy for the best exemplary service.

Addressing a media conference in Mumbai on Friday, DD director general S Y Quraishi said the pubcaster was also finalising a commemorative series 'A Century of Recorded Music - A Retrospective' to celebrate 100 years of recorded music in the country. The series, says Quraishi, will be a tribute to all the great artistes who contributed to the recording industry, including Gauhar Jaan, who recorded the first song in Kolkata for the Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd. The pubcaster's year long events for the centenary will culminate in an awards ceremony to honour the legends of the music industry, Quraishi said.
